The Android OS uses a NOMEDIA file (Android No Media File). This file type can be seen when you attempt to open a video on your device, but it cannot be played. A NOMEDIA file is created when no media file is available for your device to play.

Another use case is to enhance multimedia-viewing apps' performance by excluding folders that contain large numbers of images or videos from searches.
