A PS file is an image saved in PostScript page description language. This file contains a page layout consisting of vector graphics, bitmap graphics, and text. With the PS language, the user can print page layouts and PS files from a PostScript printer containing a bitmap image processor without having to open them in an application.

Adobe Systems created the PS language in the 1980s to provide computers with a way to convert text with graphics on page layouts efficiently. Adobe decided to release the first version of PS in 1984, after which new versions began to appear infrequently in 1991 and 1997. After a while, other page layout formats replaced this format.
