An ASHX file is considered a web page, part of an ASP.NET web server application. This file contains links to other pages placed on the web server and sent to the web browser. ASHX files are handled by the HTTP handler on the ASP.NET server if the web browser requests the page.

ASHX files are often used to send a PDF file to a browser, as the ASHX file contains a link to the PDF document. When the file is downloaded, its extension is not renamed to .pdf, remaining with .ashx. If that happens, the user can rename the file extension to .pdf, which will be viewable through Adobe Reader or another PDF viewer.
