VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion use virtual Machine Disk files (VMDK files) to store the contents of a virtual machine's hard disk drive. VMDK files are just like regular hard drive files but have the virtual machine's OS, applications, and data saved.

VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion allow you to run multiple OS on your computer simultaneously, but each operating system needs its own hard drive. That's where VMDK files come in — they allow you to store each OS's data on its own virtual hard drive file. The software that creates a VM also makes several configuration files, one of which is a VMDK file, which functions similarly to Windows' C:\ drive.

You can open a VMDK file with the related app: it opens the file by default when starting up a VM. Alternatively, using specific software, you can mount a file as a virtual disk. Then you can make changes to your file or delete it.
