The JNLP (Java Web Start File) format is a network protocol file formatted in XML for activating Java software applications. Its primary practical purpose is the management and launch of Java runtime programs on the Internet. The JNLP file includes a structured data set containing all the information necessary to run a Java program (Jar Utility) correctly: remote address, priority activation class, link to the shortcut and the site, and description.

Using the Java Web Start, individual Java software components can be activated in "one click." The Java Web Start algorithm supports the use of the latest plugin modifications. Java applications can be launched offline without the web browser if the Java Runtime Environment software utility is installed. To run the Java Web Start, the web server must be fine-tuned to recognize the MIME type and associate it with the JNLP extension of the javaws.exe software plugin.
