A JP2 file is a compressed bitmap image stored in JPEG 2000 (JP2) Core Coding format. This file supports all bit depth colors with image metadata so that it can be compressed with/without losing quality. User saves digital photos of medical images (CT and MRI scans) as JP2 files.

The JPEG 2000 standard came from the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) in the late 1990s. This format provides significant improvements, but the main improvement is using a wavelet compression algorithm instead of DCT.
