The OFX format was created in 1997 to standardize financial data transfers between apps. Later it was adopted by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization. As the format is XML-based, it has become widely used. These files can be easily exported from personal financial software and imported into another, which makes them ideal for sharing financial information. OFX files can be viewed and edited in any text editor. However, users prefer to open them with dedicated financial software that supports the format.
