A NEF file is a raw image file made by a Nikon digital camera. NEF files contain the unprocessed data from the image sensor, along with metadata such as exposure settings, white balance, and the date and time stamp. NEF files are losslessly compressed to retain image quality. Since a NEF file holds data from the camera sensor, you can make changes to pictures without losing the resolution.

Many professional photographers and advanced amateurs use these files for their projects because the NEF format provides the highest quality image possible. When a file is saved to a PC, any changes to image settings can be applied. NEF files can be opened and edited using image-editing applications. NEF files can be converted to commonly used formats using either an image editor or file converter.
