Several different software applications, including ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro, support MXD files. These applications allow you to open an MXD file to view its contents and make necessary changes. Note that MXD map files may grow in size after being saved multiple times. Keeping a fragmented map document as a new document will reduce its file size to the minimum required for adequate display.
