A MARKDOWN file is a text file that was created with Markdown language dialects. These files are always saved in plain text and include inline text symbols, table formatting, fonts, and headers. MARKDOWN files or MD files (it is another name for this file format) can be converted to HTML file format.
There are a few apps that will help you with opening MARKDOWN files. Among them are Microsoft Notepad, Apple TextEdit, and Microsoft WordPad.

Important to add that MARKDOWN files are very convenient with the source code version by control systems, as the text files can be reviewed without a problem in the plain text against historical revisions.
