An FPX file is a bitmap image file saved in the FlashPix format. It stores multiple image resolutions in a single file, which can be viewed at different zoom levels without losing quality. The FPX file format was created by a joint venture of Kodak, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, and Live Picture. It was designed to standardize the way digital images are stored and viewed.

FPX files are used to improve website image loading times and save storage space when storing multiple images. FPX files are also sometimes used to store pictures taken with a digital camera. When a photo is taken, the camera saves several lower-resolution versions of the image in addition to the high-resolution original. The lower-resolution versions are used when an image is displayed at a smaller size. The high-resolution version is used to present an image at its full size. Some compatible applications can open FPX files.
